Static inspection

Analysis of a file without executing it, often used for signature matching.

Static inspection is the analysis of a file, script, or binary without running it. Defenders use it to look for suspicious strings, embedded objects, packing, malformed structures, and known signatures. It is fast and safe, which makes it a common first pass in antivirus engines, email gateways, and threat hunting workflows.

Its weakness is that attackers can hide malicious logic until execution time. In campaigns that encode shellcode as plain text or rebuild payloads only in memory, static inspection may see harmless-looking content instead of the real code. That is why it works best when combined with behavioral checks such as sandboxing, memory analysis, and monitoring for unusual process or script activity. In practice, static inspection is valuable for catching known malware quickly, but it becomes less reliable when the attacker uses obfuscation, loaders, or runtime decoding to delay detection.
