Stateful setting

a preference that persists across sessions, reboots, or updates.

A stateful setting is a user or system preference that persists across sessions, reboots, and software updates. Examples include mouse behavior, accessibility options, network profiles, and security controls that should remain consistent after restart. Unlike temporary values, stateful settings are stored in configuration files, the registry, policy stores, or cloud sync profiles.

In cyber security, persistence matters because losing or altering state can weaken both usability and control. A patch that resets settings may reduce trust in updates, delay rollout, or disable protective preferences. Attackers can also target stateful settings to lower defenses, such as changing browser security options, remote access rules, or authentication prompts. Defenders therefore test not only whether software runs after an update, but whether important configuration state survives correctly. Good change management, backup of settings, and post-update validation help prevent silent regressions.
