SSNs

Social Security Numbers, highly sensitive identity data often cited in extortion claims.

SSNs, or Social Security Numbers, are U.S. identity numbers used for tax, employment, and benefits administration. Because they are widely accepted as sensitive personal data, an exposed SSN can help criminals commit identity theft, open fraudulent accounts, bypass weak identity checks, or combine with other leaked details to profile a victim.

In cyber security, SSNs matter because they raise the impact of a breach. Attackers often cite SSNs in extortion claims to increase pressure, even before the data is verified. Defenders reduce risk by limiting collection, encrypting stored records, masking SSNs in logs and reports, restricting access, and monitoring for exfiltration. If SSNs may be exposed, incident response should treat them as regulated data and assess notification and fraud-prevention steps quickly.
