The SQL Server Database Engine is the core service in Microsoft SQL Server that parses queries, executes transactions, and manages data storage. It usually runs as a dedicated service under a specific service account, which is the Windows identity used for file, network, and system access.
In cyber security, this matters because the engine is often a high-value target: if an attacker reaches a code execution flaw in the database service, the process runs with whatever permissions the service account has. If that account is overprivileged, the impact can expand to file theft, lateral movement, or deeper system compromise. Defenders reduce risk by running the engine with least privilege, limiting network exposure, monitoring unusual SQL activity, and patching quickly when the database engine is affected by known vulnerabilities.
