A spend cap is a preset limit that stops or flags usage once a budget threshold is reached. In cloud and AI platforms, it is usually enforced at the account, project, team, or API-key level. When usage approaches the limit, the system may alert operators, require approval, or block further requests until the cap is raised.
In cyber security, spend caps are an important control against abuse and runaway automation. A stolen API key, a misconfigured agent, or a malicious script can generate large volumes of requests and quickly create unexpected costs. Caps help contain that damage, limit fraud, and give defenders time to investigate. They are often paired with usage telemetry, per-user attribution, and anomaly alerts so security and finance teams can spot unusual consumption before it becomes a service outage or a large bill.
