Spectrum analyzer

A visualization that shows the shape of an audio signal across frequencies.

A spectrum analyzer is a visualization of an audio signal split across frequencies. Instead of showing only loud or quiet, it reveals which pitches or bands are present and how strong they are over time. This makes it easier to spot patterns that are hard to hear in raw sound.

In cyber security, spectrum analysis is useful whenever audio can carry data or hide signals. Defenders may use it to inspect suspicious tones, detect ultrasonic beacons, or verify that a device is not emitting unintended acoustic leakage. Attackers can also abuse audio channels for covert communication or signaling between compromised devices. On small embedded systems, a spectrum display helps engineers debug microphones, filters, sampling rates, and interference because it turns signal quality into something visible at a glance.
