Source validation

The process of checking whether a person, claim, or channel is trustworthy and authentic.

Source validation is the process of checking whether a person, claim, message, or communication channel is trustworthy and authentic. In cyber security, it helps defenders avoid acting on false identities, spoofed emails, fake personas, manipulated reports, or synthetic content that looks credible at first glance.

This matters because many attacks succeed by abusing trust rather than breaking encryption. Phishing, business email compromise, social engineering, and insider recruitment often rely on a target believing the source is legitimate. Strong source validation uses multiple signals, such as identity verification, out-of-band confirmation, historical behavior, context, and access control. In intelligence and incident response, it also means corroborating claims with independent evidence before making decisions. The goal is not only to detect fraud, but to reduce the risk of deception spreading through an organization’s workflow.
