Source evaluation is the practice of checking where information comes from, who produced it, and how trustworthy it is. In cyber security, it is essential because attackers often rely on false or manipulated information: phishing emails may imitate trusted brands, fake alerts may imitate system messages, and misleading posts may push users toward unsafe downloads or credential theft. A quick source check can reveal an unknown sender, a suspicious domain, missing context, or claims that do not match other evidence.
Defenders use source evaluation when reviewing threat reports, logs, vendor advisories, and user-submitted alerts. They compare multiple sources, look for technical details, and ask whether the evidence supports the claim. In practice, good source evaluation helps separate signal from noise, reducing the chance of acting on rumor, social engineering, or bogus data. It is a basic verification skill that strengthens both security decisions and everyday digital judgment.
