Software support window

the time period during which a product receives fixes and security updates.

A software support window is the time period during which a product’s vendor provides fixes, patches, and security updates. During this window, known vulnerabilities can be corrected, compatibility issues can be addressed, and administrators can plan routine maintenance with some confidence that updates will continue to arrive.

In cyber security, the support window matters because unpatched software quickly becomes a target. Once support ends, attackers often focus on the product’s known weaknesses, knowing defenders may have no official fix to apply. Security teams use support windows to guide procurement, patch management, and retirement planning, choosing products with longer maintenance commitments when systems must stay online. A clear support window also helps defenders reduce exposure by tracking end-of-support dates, testing updates early, and replacing software before it becomes a permanent risk.
