SoftPOS is software that turns a smartphone or tablet into a contactless payment terminal, so a merchant can accept tap-to-pay cards or wallets without a separate card reader. It is often used in small retail, delivery, and mobile service scenarios where portability and low setup cost matter.
SoftPOS matters because it moves part of the payment environment onto a general-purpose device. That makes security depend not only on the payment app, but also on the device’s operating system, patch level, screen-lock policy, and app controls. Attackers may try to abuse rooted or jailbroken devices, malware, or unauthorized apps to interfere with payment workflows or steal data. Defenders reduce risk with device management, app hardening, trusted payment frameworks, and standards such as EMVCo TapToMobile and PCI MPoC, which define security requirements for contactless acceptance on off-the-shelf devices.
