snap7.dll

A dual-use library that can automate access to Siemens S7 PLCs for legitimate testing or malicious scripting.

snap7.dll is a dual-use software library for communicating with Siemens S7 programmable logic controllers. It provides programmatic access to S7 devices, letting an application read and write controller data, inspect status, and automate routine engineering or test tasks. In a lab or plant-support setting, that can be useful for validation, diagnostics, and integration testing.

The same capability also matters to attackers. Because S7 communications commonly use TCP port 102, a script built on snap7.dll can help automate reconnaissance or unauthorized read/write actions against exposed controllers. Security teams treat it as a risk multiplier when PLCs are reachable from untrusted networks, since a small amount of code can interact with control logic at scale. Defenses focus on segmentation, strong authentication, allowlisting, and monitoring for unusual S7 traffic, especially from non-engineering hosts.
