Smart controller

An advanced OT device that can combine processing, communications, and control functions.

A smart controller is an advanced operational technology device that combines local processing, communications, and control functions. It can read sensors, run logic, exchange data with other systems, and directly influence physical equipment such as motors, valves, or production lines. In industrial environments, smart controllers often sit between field devices and higher-level supervision systems, making them a core part of the control chain.

From a cyber security perspective, smart controllers matter because compromise can affect both digital operations and physical outcomes. If an attacker changes firmware, steals credentials, or abuses remote management interfaces, the controller may execute unsafe commands or hide process changes. Defenders look for secure boot, signed updates, strong authentication, configuration control, logging, and network segmentation. In procurement and assurance programs, smart controllers are often evaluated for these controls because trust in the device is essential before it is deployed in high-criticality OT systems.
