Site blocker

A tool that restricts access to selected websites during chosen time periods.

A site blocker is a control that restricts access to selected websites for a defined time or under specific conditions. It may work in a browser extension, endpoint tool, DNS filter, proxy, or network policy. In practice, it is used to block distracting or risky destinations, such as social media during work hours or known malicious domains in an enterprise environment.

In cyber security, site blockers matter because they reduce opportunities for phishing, malware downloads, credential theft, and unsafe browsing. They are a defensive layer, not a complete solution: users can still be tricked into visiting lookalike domains, switching devices, or using alternate apps and networks. Attackers may also try to disable, bypass, or tamper with the blocking mechanism. Strong site blocking therefore depends on correct policy, tamper resistance, and monitoring. When combined with web filtering, allow lists, and security awareness, it helps lower exposure and enforce safer online behavior.
