Shift-left

A security approach that moves checks earlier in development, before software is deployed.

Shift-left is a security approach that moves testing and policy checks earlier in the software lifecycle, usually into development and continuous integration pipelines before release. Instead of waiting for production traffic to expose mistakes, teams validate code, infrastructure, and API contracts while changes are still cheap to fix. Common shift-left controls include secret scanning, dependency checks, static analysis, and OpenAPI contract validation.

In cyber security, shift-left matters because many weaknesses are introduced during build time: missing authentication, overly broad permissions, unsafe inputs, or undocumented API endpoints. Catching these issues before deployment reduces the chance that attackers can abuse them in live systems. In practice, shift-left appears as automated checks that block merges or releases when policy fails. It works best when development teams keep specifications accurate, because the security gate can only enforce what it can see and understand.
