Shared workstation

A device used by more than one person, where visibility and access controls matter more.

A shared workstation is a computer used by multiple people, such as a public terminal, a lab PC, or a shift-based office device. Because several users touch the same system, security depends less on one person’s habits and more on strong visibility controls, session hygiene, and access boundaries. Logs, browser history, cached files, and search indexes can expose what previous users opened or searched for, even if the current user never had permission to see the original data.

In cyber security, shared workstations are important because they increase the risk of information leakage, account mix-ups, and unauthorized reuse of active sessions. Defenders typically reduce these risks with automatic sign-out, separate user profiles, least-privilege access, disk encryption, and restrictions on local indexing or cached content. Attackers may exploit a poorly locked shared device by reading leftovers from another user, stealing a logged-in session, or discovering sensitive folder names and work patterns through local search. On such systems, convenience features must be reviewed as part of the trust boundary.
