Shape sensing is the measurement of an object's form by detecting deformation or movement across its surface. Sensors can track changes such as bending, twisting, or shifting, then convert those signals into an estimate of the object's geometry. Some approaches use optical waveguides embedded in flexible materials; others rely on different sensor technologies.
In cyber security, shape sensing is relevant wherever physical measurements feed connected systems, such as robotics, virtual reality, or industrial monitoring. The sensor data may reveal how a device or object is being used, and inaccurate or manipulated readings can lead software to misinterpret its position or condition. Defenses include validating sensor inputs, checking measurements against independent signals, and protecting data paths from tampering. Shape sensing is a measurement technique, not by itself a security control.
