Session reconstruction

The process of rebuilding a communication session from captured packets or traffic copies.

Session reconstruction is the process of rebuilding an application or network conversation from captured packets, mirrored traffic, or flow data. Instead of viewing isolated packets, security tools stitch them together into a usable picture of a login, file transfer, web request, or other exchange.

It matters because many defenses depend on seeing the full context of communication. Network-visibility platforms use session reconstruction to generate alerts, metadata, and evidence for incident response and forensics. In attacks, criminals may try to compromise these tools because they can reveal sensitive internal traffic, help map infrastructure, or expose how defenders detect activity. If reconstruction is incomplete or manipulated, analysts may miss commands, credentials, or exfiltration patterns. That is why high-trust monitoring systems need strong access control, integrity checks, and independent logging.
