Session length is the amount of time a user remains active in an app or website before ending the visit or becoming idle. Security teams and fraud analysts use it as a behavioral signal because real users tend to show natural pauses, exits, and varied interaction patterns.
It matters in cyber security and ad fraud detection because automation can imitate long, engaged sessions. Bots may scroll, click, or keep a page open to make traffic look legitimate and to inflate metrics such as views, clicks, and time spent. Defenders compare session length with other signals, including input timing, navigation paths, device behavior, and background activity, to spot scripted use. A long session is not proof of abuse, but unusual consistency across many sessions can reveal a hidden automation campaign.
