Service-security configuration

The access-control rules that determine which users can reach a service or operation, including anonymous access.

Service-security configuration is the set of access-control rules that decide who can reach a service, endpoint, or operation. It covers authentication, authorization, network exposure, and whether anonymous access is allowed. In practice, it defines whether a request must carry valid credentials, whether a role is required, and which functions are public.

This matters because many attacks rely on reaching a vulnerable feature in the first place. If a service is exposed without proper controls, an attacker may probe it anonymously, test inputs, and abuse weak query handling or admin functions. In defense, secure configuration reduces attack surface by restricting public access, requiring strong authentication, and limiting privileges for service accounts. For systems such as geospatial servers, the configuration of filter-bearing services can determine whether sensitive query paths are reachable from the internet or only from trusted users.
