A Service Portal is ServiceNow’s public or semi-public web layer for self-service content, knowledge, and workflows. It is designed to let users view pages, submit requests, and interact with services through a browser without needing deep access to the underlying platform.
In cyber security, Service Portals matter because their exposure is controlled by configuration, not just authentication. Page visibility, roles, and published content sources determine what a guest can see. If those controls are too broad, anonymous visitors may enumerate search results, articles, forms, or other data meant to stay limited. Attackers often automate that browsing to harvest exposed information at scale, while defenders test the portal as an outsider, tighten guest permissions, and monitor for unusual request patterns or repeated non-browser access.
