Server migration

moving workloads, data, and services from one environment to another.

Server migration is the process of moving workloads, data, and services from one environment to another, such as from legacy hardware to a virtualized platform or a new cloud stack. In cyber security, migration is a high-risk change event because access controls, dependencies, and monitoring must all continue working while systems are in motion.

Attackers can exploit weak migration planning by targeting temporary admin accounts, exposed management interfaces, or misconfigured backups. A rushed move can also leave old credentials active, break logging, or create gaps in segmentation that help lateral movement. Defenders use dependency mapping, authentication checks, configuration validation, and recovery testing to reduce those risks. A well-run migration can improve security by centralizing management, simplifying patching, and removing legacy complexity, but only if the new control plane is governed carefully.
