Server culling

A design approach that withholds unneeded game state from clients.

Server culling is a multiplayer game design approach that withholds unneeded game state from clients. Instead of sending every player, item, or positional update to every machine, the server only shares data a client needs to render and simulate fair play. This reduces exposure of sensitive information such as hidden player locations or off-screen entities.

In cyber security, server culling matters because less shared state means less data for cheats to steal, inspect, or reconstruct. Wallhacks and similar tools often depend on receiving or inferring location data that should stay hidden. By limiting what the client sees, defenders shrink the attack surface and make cheat development harder. The tradeoff is engineering complexity: the game still has to stay synchronized, keep hit registration accurate, and avoid visible pop-in or timing glitches. Server culling is not a complete anti-cheat system, but it is a useful prevention measure that makes abuse less effective by design.
