Selfie

A self-taken image that often functions as both expression and social signal.

A selfie is a self-taken image, usually captured with a phone or webcam, that can function as both personal expression and a social signal. In cyber security, selfies matter because they often reveal more than the face in the frame: background details, location clues, work badges, device screens, and habits such as where and when a person posts.

Attackers use selfies for open-source intelligence, impersonation, and social engineering. A public image can help them answer account-recovery questions, craft convincing phishing messages, or build a fake profile that looks authentic. Selfies also affect defenses when organizations use face recognition or selfie-based identity checks, which can be weakened by poor capture controls, reused images, or deepfake abuse. Good practice includes limiting public sharing, stripping image metadata, checking backgrounds, and treating any self-published photo as potential intelligence.
