Self-replicating malware

Malicious code designed to copy itself or spread to other systems, often with little or no human involvement.

Self-replicating malware is malicious code that copies itself or spreads to other systems with little or no help from a user. It includes many worms and some viruses, which reuse local files, network shares, exploits, or stolen credentials to move from one host to another. The goal is persistence and scale: one infected machine can become many, increasing disruption, theft, or encryption speed.

In real attacks, self-replication helps malware escape the first foothold and reach more endpoints before defenders react. It is often paired with scanning, automated payload delivery, and command-and-control traffic. Defenders reduce the risk with patching, segmentation, least privilege, email filtering, EDR, and strict egress controls. Sandboxes and isolated test environments also help analysts observe spreading behavior safely.
