Self-managed server

A system operated by an organization rather than by a hosted service provider.

A self-managed server is a system that an organization installs, configures, patches, and secures itself instead of relying on a hosted provider. In cybersecurity, this ownership matters because the operator is responsible for updates, access control, logging, backups, and exposure to the internet. If an application flaw appears, the organization must patch it quickly and verify that the instance is not vulnerable.

Self-managed deployments often become higher-priority targets because they may lag behind managed services in patching or configuration hardening. Attackers can exploit exposed admin interfaces, API flaws, or weak controls to modify data, delete projects, or steal credentials. Defenders reduce risk by tracking versions, limiting network reachability, enforcing least privilege, and monitoring for unusual changes. In platforms like GitLab, a self-managed server puts project integrity directly in the operator’s hands.
