Security tool sprawl is the buildup of many separate security products, consoles, and alert streams across an environment. Each tool may solve one problem well, but together they can create fragmented visibility, duplicate alerts, and gaps between teams. In cyber security, that matters because defenders need a clear, shared view of assets, events, and access in order to detect and contain incidents quickly.
In real attacks, tool sprawl can slow investigation: logs may be split across endpoint, network, cloud, and OT platforms, so analysts spend time stitching evidence together while an attacker moves laterally or disrupts operations. In defense, organizations reduce this risk by consolidating telemetry, standardizing workflows, and integrating alerts into a single response process. This is especially important in industrial environments, where safety and uptime limit how often systems can be changed or patched.
