Security control testing

Checking whether defenses like firewalls, EDR, or WAFs really detect or block relevant attack activity.

Security control testing is the process of checking whether a defensive control actually works against realistic attack behavior. Instead of assuming a firewall, EDR agent, WAF, or SIEM rule is effective because it is configured, teams validate whether it detects, blocks, or logs the activity it is meant to stop. This can be done with safe simulations, red-team style tests, or automated attack emulation.

It matters because controls often look strong on paper but fail in practice: a rule may be too narrow, a sensor may miss a known technique, or an alert may never reach the right responders. In real attacks, adversaries probe these gaps by changing payloads, using living-off-the-land tools, or moving between endpoints and network layers until a control misses something. Regular control testing helps defenders find blind spots, confirm compensating mitigations, and verify that changes after patching or tuning still protect the environment.
