Scenario simulation

testing possible outcomes before making a real-world decision.

Scenario simulation is the practice of testing possible outcomes before taking a real-world action. It uses a model, assumptions, and input data to ask, “What happens if this choice is made?” In cyber security, this helps teams estimate the impact of an attack path, a configuration change, or a defensive control before it is deployed.

Security teams use scenario simulation for incident response drills, ransomware spread analysis, access-control testing, and resilience planning. It can reveal weak points in a network, show how an attacker might move laterally, or compare the effect of different mitigation steps. Used well, it supports better decisions because it turns uncertain risk into something that can be explored, measured, and discussed. Used poorly, it can give a false sense of confidence if the model is incomplete or the assumptions are unrealistic.
