Safer design is a security approach that changes a system so it is harder to misuse and less likely to expose users to harm. Instead of relying only on training or warnings, it builds guardrails into the product: secure defaults, least privilege, confirmation steps for risky actions, clear error handling, and limits on what a feature can do.
In cyber security, safer design matters because attackers often exploit weak controls, confusing interfaces, or overly powerful features. A poorly designed admin panel, an exposed API, or an unsafe default setting can turn a small mistake into a breach. Defenders use safer design to reduce the blast radius of errors and attacks, for example by sandboxing code, separating privileges, and making sensitive operations harder to trigger accidentally or remotely.
