S7 refers to a Siemens family of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) used to automate industrial processes such as water treatment, power distribution, manufacturing, and building controls. These devices run control logic that directly influences physical equipment, so security failures can affect availability, safety, and process integrity rather than just data.
In cyber security, S7 systems matter because attackers who reach the controller or its engineering path may try to read project data, change logic, alter setpoints, or disrupt operations. Defenders typically treat S7 communications as sensitive OT traffic, often associated with TCP/102, and protect it with network segmentation, strict access control, asset inventory, change monitoring, and hardened engineering workstations. In real environments, the main risk is not the PLC alone, but the exposed route to manage it.
