The Run dialog is a Windows shortcut box, usually opened with Win+R, that lets a user launch programs, open paths, or run commands quickly. It accepts short text input and hands it to Windows for execution, which makes it a simple and powerful entry point for legitimate administration.
In cyber security, that same convenience can be abused. Attackers may trick users into pasting a command into the Run dialog so they execute code themselves, bypassing some file-based defenses and making the activity look like normal user action. Social-engineering lures, fake verification prompts, and “copy this command” instructions often rely on this interface. Defenders look for unusual Run dialog use, suspicious paste behavior, and commands that start scripting tools, downloaders, or encoded payloads.
