The Rule of 40 is a SaaS heuristic that adds revenue growth rate and profit margin to estimate overall business health. A company is often viewed as stronger when the sum is around 40 or higher. It is not a security metric, but it is useful in AI-native SaaS because usage-based billing, inference costs, and margin swings can change the numbers behind it very quickly.
In cyber security, the Rule of 40 matters because the data feeding it must be trustworthy. If usage telemetry is duplicated, delayed, or tampered with, billing, revenue recognition, and margin analysis can all be distorted. Attackers or faulty integrations may try to inflate consumption, hide spend, or create noisy records that mask abuse. Defenders use controls such as audit logs, reconciliation, and anomaly detection to protect the systems that measure growth and profitability, since those measurements can influence executive decisions and valuation.
