Rule migration is the process of moving firewall rules and their related metadata, such as comments, objects, dependencies, and approval history, from one management platform to another. It is common when organizations replace a vendor, consolidate tools, or recover from a platform shutdown.
This matters because firewall rules are often more than simple allow or deny entries. They encode business intent, exceptions, and audit evidence. During migration, missing context can create configuration drift, break automation, or leave outdated rules in place. Defenders use careful export, mapping, and validation to preserve policy meaning and verify that the new platform enforces the same controls. Attackers may benefit from poor migration by exploiting gaps, misapplied rules, or temporary exceptions created during the transition. Strong rule migration therefore supports both operational continuity and security assurance.
