Rollback capability

The ability to reverse harmful automated actions quickly after they occur.

Rollback capability is the ability to quickly reverse harmful automated actions after they have happened. In security operations, this may mean reverting a changed record, restoring a deleted configuration, canceling an issued approval, or revoking access that was granted in error. It matters because automated systems can act faster than humans can review, so even a small mistake can spread across many systems before anyone notices.

In real defenses, rollback is a containment control: it reduces blast radius, limits business impact, and gives responders time to investigate. In attacks, it is often what defenders wish they had when an AI agent, script, or compromised account sends emails, changes permissions, or triggers workflows at scale. Good rollback design includes audit logs, versioned state, approval gates, and clear recovery steps. It is most effective when the original action is traceable and reversible.
