A role-specific work sample is a practical hiring task that asks a candidate to do work similar to the job itself. In cyber security, that might mean reviewing suspicious logs, triaging an alert, writing a short detection rule, analyzing a phishing email, or explaining a secure code change. Unlike a resume or a general interview, a work sample tests hands-on judgment, technical accuracy, and how a person approaches ambiguous problems under realistic constraints.
This matters because cyber roles are operational: teams need people who can act correctly on real signals, not just talk about tools. Work samples help defenders verify skill before giving access to sensitive systems, reduce the risk of hiring based on polished claims alone, and improve fit for specialized roles such as SOC analyst, incident responder, reverse engineer, or secure developer. In practice, well-designed exercises mirror the tasks defenders face every day, making them one of the clearest ways to assess true capability.
