Role-based approval

A control that limits sensitive authorization to specific job functions.

Role-based approval is a security control that allows only designated job functions to authorize sensitive actions. Instead of letting any employee approve high-risk requests, the organization assigns approval rights to specific roles such as manager, supervisor, finance lead, or security officer. The idea is to separate duties so that no single person can both request and finalize a risky change or payment.

This matters because attackers often try to bypass technical defenses by pressuring staff into approving something quickly. If approval is tied to a role, a fraudulent request is less likely to succeed when it reaches someone without the right authority. In practice, role-based approval appears in payment workflows, account changes, password resets, access grants, and incident exceptions. Strong implementations pair role restrictions with identity verification, logging, and dual approval for especially sensitive actions. Used well, it slows down rushed decisions and makes social engineering harder to turn into real damage.
