Robot locomotion

The way a robot moves from place to place.

Robot locomotion is the way a robot moves from place to place, whether by wheels, legs, tracks, crawling, or flying. In legged systems, locomotion depends on actuators, sensors, control software, and power delivery working together so the machine can balance, steer, and recover from disturbance.

It matters in cyber security because movement is part of the attack surface. If an attacker tampers with control software, sensor inputs, or communication links, they may force a robot to move incorrectly, stop safely, drift off course, or collide with objects. Defenders protect locomotion with authenticated commands, signed firmware, sensor validation, anomaly detection, and fail-safe modes that limit speed or freeze motion when data looks wrong. In practice, secure locomotion design helps prevent both remote misuse and physical damage.
