Retrieval Layer

The part of an AI system that fetches external content before generating an answer.

The retrieval layer is the part of an AI system that searches for and fetches external content before the model generates an answer. In retrieval-augmented systems, it may pull documents from databases, web pages, policy files, or other indexed sources, then pass the selected material to the language model as context. This layer is important because it determines what information the model can “see” and therefore what it is likely to repeat, summarize, or emphasize.

In cyber security, the retrieval layer is a major integrity boundary. If an attacker can poison the source data, manipulate ranking, or inject hidden instructions into retrieved text, the final response may be skewed or controlled without the model itself being compromised. Defenders watch this layer for prompt injection, source poisoning, and uneven filtering, especially in high-stakes uses such as elections, support desks, and internal search. Auditing retrieved content, logging source selection, and separating instructions from data help reduce abuse.
