Responsibility allocation

The contractual split of duties, risks, and liabilities between the parties.

Responsibility allocation is the contractual split of duties, risks, and liabilities between parties. In cybersecurity, it defines who configures controls, who approves data use, who monitors the system, and who must respond if something goes wrong. This matters because security failures often happen in the seams between organizations: one side assumes the other is filtering data, reviewing AI output, logging activity, or handling incidents, while the contract says none of that clearly.

Clear allocation helps prevent attacks and limit damage. For example, if an AI service processes sensitive data, the contract should state who may upload it, where it can be stored, who can retrain on it, and who is liable for leakage, misuse, or bad automated output. Defenders use this structure to assign access control, audit rights, notification timelines, and remediation duties. Without it, security gaps become legal gaps, and legal gaps become operational risk.
