A resilience exercise is a structured practice session that tests how a team responds to disruption, uncertainty, or attack conditions. It may simulate an outage, suspicious activity, degraded communications, or incomplete evidence so participants must make decisions with limited information. The goal is not to “win” a scenario, but to expose gaps in process, coordination, and judgment before a real crisis.
In cyber security, resilience exercises matter because attacks rarely arrive as a clear, confirmed incident. Teams may see partial alerts, unusual remote access, or unexpected system behavior and still need to decide whether to monitor, escalate, isolate, or continue operations. These exercises help defenders rehearse escalation paths, communication between security and operations, and safe containment steps. They are especially valuable in critical environments where a wrong action can cause downtime or safety risks.
