Remote terminal

A command-line session reached over a network instead of local access.

A remote terminal is a command-line session that you reach over a network instead of sitting at the machine itself. It may be provided through SSH, a web shell, or another relay service, but the key idea is the same: you type commands on one system and they run on another. This is useful for administration, troubleshooting, automation, and collaborative support.

In cyber security, a remote terminal is sensitive because it can provide direct control of a host, often with the same privileges as the account behind it. Attackers try to steal credentials, session tokens, links, or codes to get interactive access, while defenders focus on strong authentication, short-lived sessions, logging, least privilege, and revocation. When a terminal is shared through a URL, QR code, or numeric code, that share mechanism becomes part of the trust boundary and must be protected like any other access path.
