Remote shell

A capability that lets an operator run commands on a compromised machine from a distance.

A remote shell is a capability that lets an operator run commands on a compromised machine from a distance, as if sitting at its keyboard. It can be interactive, accepting single commands one by one, or it can provide a more persistent command channel for automation and follow-on control.

In cyber security, a remote shell matters because it turns an infection from simple theft or spying into active host control. Attackers use it to enumerate files, dump credentials, launch tools, install additional malware, or move deeper into a network. Defenders look for signs such as unusual child processes, outbound command traffic, suspicious shells spawned by browsers or office apps, and encrypted low-volume beacons. If a stealer or loader gains shell access, incident response should treat the system as a live intrusion point, not just a data-loss event.
