Remote monitoring

The collection of patient information from a distance for clinical review.

Remote monitoring is the collection of patient information from a distance for clinical review. In digital healthcare, it usually means connected devices or apps sending vital signs, symptoms, or device status to clinicians over a network instead of storing everything at the bedside.

In cyber security, remote monitoring matters because it expands the attack surface. If an attacker intercepts data, alters readings, or impersonates a device, clinicians may make bad decisions based on false telemetry. Defenders therefore protect these systems with strong authentication, encryption in transit, signed data where possible, secure device enrollment, and alerting for missing or unusual readings. Remote monitoring also needs good access control and logging so staff can review who saw the data and when.
