Remote Desktop

A Microsoft remote access method that lets a user control another Windows device after authentication and permission checks.

Remote Desktop is a Microsoft access method that lets an authenticated user control another Windows computer over the network. It is used for remote administration, help desk support, and jump-host workflows. Before a session opens, Windows checks identity, permission, and local policy, then builds a security context for the user. If any of those steps fail, the connection is denied even when the network path is reachable.

In cyber security, Remote Desktop matters because it is both useful and high risk. Attackers often target exposed Remote Desktop services with password guessing, stolen credentials, or token abuse to move laterally inside a network. Defenders reduce that risk by limiting who can connect, requiring strong authentication, placing access behind VPNs or gateways, and monitoring for unusual logons. In practice, Remote Desktop should be treated as a privileged control plane, not just a convenience feature, because mistakes in its configuration can quickly become an entry point or an outage.
