Remote command execution

A condition where an attacker can run commands on a target device from afar.

Remote command execution (RCE) is a condition where an attacker can make a target system run commands from afar. It often happens when a web form, API, or management panel passes user input into operating system utilities without strict validation. In that case, a seemingly harmless field such as a hostname, ping target, or traceroute parameter can become a path to shell access.

RCE matters because it can turn a small input flaw into full device compromise. On routers, appliances, and other edge devices, successful exploitation may let an attacker steal data, change settings, install malware, or add the device to a botnet. Defenders look for this risk in diagnostic endpoints and other admin features by avoiding shelling out where possible, separating data from commands, validating input, and limiting management access to trusted networks.
