Remote Arbitrary-Code Execution

A flaw that can let an attacker run commands or programs on a target system from a remote location.

Remote arbitrary-code execution (RCE) is a vulnerability that can allow an attacker to run commands or programs on a target system over a network. “Arbitrary” means the attacker may be able to choose what code runs, while the actual access and impact depend on the flaw, required permissions, and system configuration.

RCE matters because successful exploitation can compromise the affected application or host, potentially exposing data or enabling further access. In software security advisories, including those affecting developer tools, RCE describes a possible vulnerability impact; it does not by itself prove that a system is exposed or that exploitation has occurred. Defenders should identify affected products and versions, apply the vendor’s fixed releases, and use any recommended mitigations if patching must wait.
