Reliability testing

Checking whether equipment performs correctly under real-world conditions before it is relied on.

Reliability testing is the process of checking whether equipment keeps working correctly under real-world conditions, such as long runtime, power fluctuations, temperature changes, vibration, or repeated start-stop cycles. The goal is to find weak points before the device is trusted in the field. In the context of cyber security, this matters for embedded systems, security appliances, sensors, and emergency hardware, where a failure can be just as damaging as a direct attack.

Attackers often benefit when defenders assume a device is dependable without verifying it. A weak battery, unstable power supply, or aging component can cause crashes, missed alerts, failed authentication, or lost logs, creating openings for intrusion or disruption. Defenders use reliability testing to catch these problems early by power-cycling devices, checking battery life, simulating harsh conditions, and confirming that security functions still operate when hardware is stressed.
