Release image

The container image set used to define an OpenShift release and support cluster upgrades.

A release image is the container image set that defines a specific OpenShift release. It packages the platform components, metadata, and upgrade information that a cluster uses to identify a valid version and move between versions safely. In practice, the release image acts like the signed source of truth for the platform build.

This matters in cyber security because update integrity depends on trusting that the release image has not been altered. Administrators may mirror it into internal registries for disconnected deployments, where signature verification and registry controls help prevent tampering. In attacks, a compromised or misvalidated release image can become a supply-chain risk, allowing malicious code or unsafe updates to be staged as trusted content. In defense, keeping release-image verification intact helps ensure upgrades come only from approved, authenticated sources.
