Release gate

A decision point that can block or allow deployment based on safety, security, or quality checks.

A release gate is a control point in the deployment pipeline where a system must pass safety, security, or quality checks before it can ship. The gate may be automatic, such as a failed vulnerability scan, or manual, such as an approval from security, engineering, or risk reviewers. In modern software and AI operations, release gates turn policy into an enforceable technical control.

Release gates matter in cyber security because they reduce the chance that insecure code, exposed secrets, unsafe model behavior, or unstable infrastructure reaches production. In real attacks, adversaries may try to weaken these checks by tampering with test environments, hiding malicious changes in a build, or pressuring teams to bypass approvals. Defenders use gates to enforce patch levels, dependency review, signed artifacts, model evaluations, and rollback criteria. A strong release gate does not stop all risk, but it creates a point where security can interrupt unsafe deployment before it becomes an incident.
