Relationship-building is the practice of creating understandable, two-way communication with an audience. In cyber security, it means more than sending messages: defenders explain risks clearly, invite feedback, and make it easy for people to act on guidance. This matters because security depends on human behavior as much as technical controls. If users do not trust or understand a warning, they may ignore it, delay reporting, or repeat unsafe habits.
In real attacks, criminals also try to imitate relationship-building. Phishing, pretexting, and social engineering often work by sounding familiar, helpful, or authoritative enough to lower suspicion. In defense, teams build relationships with employees, customers, and partners so that alerts, incident instructions, and reporting channels are used quickly and correctly. Good relationship-building improves awareness, cooperation, and resilience.
